Two years ago, the question was whether to use AI at all. Today, the question is which AI tool to use. For most organisations, that comes down to two dominant platforms: OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
Both are capable. Both are evolving at extraordinary speed. And both are increasingly targeting enterprise customers with features designed for business use. But beneath the surface, there are meaningful differences in capabilities, pricing, data handling, and ecosystem integration that should inform your choice.
À retenir
- ChatGPT leads in conversational depth, reasoning, and plugin ecosystem; Gemini leads in multimodal capabilities and Google Workspace integration
- Enterprise pricing is comparable, but the total cost depends on your existing technology stack
- Data privacy handling differs significantly — particularly around training data usage and data residency
- Most organisations will benefit from allowing both tools and training teams to use each for its strengths
The models behind the tools
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
ChatGPT is powered by OpenAI’s GPT series of models. As of early 2026:
- GPT-4o is the standard model for Plus and Enterprise users — fast, capable, and multimodal (text, image, audio, video)
- GPT-4.5 offers enhanced reasoning and reduced hallucination rates
- o3 is OpenAI’s reasoning-focused model for complex analytical and coding tasks
- GPT-4o mini serves as the lightweight, faster option for simpler tasks
OpenAI updates its models frequently, with incremental improvements arriving monthly and major model releases roughly quarterly.
Gemini (Google)
Gemini is Google’s family of AI models, fully integrated into Google’s ecosystem:
- Gemini 2.0 Ultra is the flagship — the most capable model, with strong multimodal performance
- Gemini 2.0 Pro is the standard model for most business use cases
- Gemini 2.0 Flash offers speed-optimised performance for real-time applications
- Gemini Nano runs on-device for mobile and edge applications
Google’s advantage is native multimodal capability — Gemini was designed from the ground up to process text, images, audio, and video simultaneously, rather than having these capabilities added incrementally.
Feature comparison
Conversational and text tasks
ChatGPT remains the stronger conversational AI for most text-based tasks. Its responses tend to be more nuanced, better-structured, and more consistent in tone. For writing, summarising, and analysis, ChatGPT typically produces higher-quality first drafts.
Gemini has improved significantly but can be less consistent in long-form outputs. Where Gemini excels is in tasks that combine text with other modalities — analysing documents with images, processing video content, or working with structured data.
Coding and technical tasks
ChatGPT (particularly with o3) is generally considered stronger for complex coding tasks, debugging, and technical reasoning. GitHub Copilot is built on OpenAI’s models, which has given ChatGPT a significant head start in developer ecosystems.
Gemini performs well on standard coding tasks and has the advantage of deep integration with Google Cloud Platform, making it the natural choice for organisations building on GCP infrastructure.
Multimodal capabilities
Gemini leads here. Native multimodal processing means Gemini handles image analysis, video understanding, and audio processing more naturally than ChatGPT. For organisations that work heavily with visual or multimedia content, this is a meaningful advantage.
ChatGPT has strong image generation (via DALL-E) and solid image analysis, but its multimodal capabilities feel more like additions to a text-first system than a natively multimodal experience.
Search and information retrieval
Gemini has direct access to Google Search, giving it more current information and better sourcing for factual queries. This is a significant advantage for research-type tasks.
ChatGPT relies on its training data and a browsing feature that is less deeply integrated than Gemini’s search capability. For tasks requiring up-to-date information, Gemini generally has the edge.

Enterprise features
ChatGPT Enterprise / Team
- Data isolation. Enterprise conversations are not used for model training. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit.
- Admin controls. Centralised user management, usage analytics, and policy enforcement.
- Custom GPTs. Organisations can build custom AI assistants with specific instructions, knowledge bases, and tool access.
- API access. Included in Enterprise plans for building custom integrations.
- SSO and SCIM. Enterprise-grade identity management.
- SOC 2 Type II compliance.
Google Gemini for Workspace / Vertex AI
- Google Workspace integration. Gemini is embedded directly into Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet. For organisations on Google Workspace, this reduces friction significantly.
- Vertex AI. Google’s enterprise AI platform offers Gemini models alongside MLOps tools, custom model training, and enterprise-grade security.
- Data residency. Google offers data residency guarantees within the EU and UK — important for organisations with strict data sovereignty requirements.
- DLP and compliance. Integration with Google’s existing data loss prevention and compliance tools.
- Grounding. Gemini can be grounded in organisation-specific data through Google Search or custom data sources, reducing hallucination risk.
Pricing comparison
Pricing evolves rapidly, but as of early 2026:
| Plan | ChatGPT | Gemini |
|---|---|---|
| Free | GPT-4o mini, limited usage | Gemini Pro, limited usage |
| Individual paid | £18/month (Plus) | £18.99/month (Advanced) |
| Team | £20/user/month | Included in Workspace Business+ |
| Enterprise | Custom pricing | Custom pricing (Vertex AI) |
The true cost comparison depends on your existing stack. If you are already on Google Workspace, Gemini’s enterprise features come with minimal incremental cost. If you are on Microsoft 365, Copilot (which uses OpenAI’s models) may be more cost-effective than either standalone tool.

Data privacy: the critical difference
Data privacy is the most important consideration for enterprise use, and the two platforms differ meaningfully.
ChatGPT
- Free and Plus tier: conversations may be used for model training (opt-out available)
- Team and Enterprise: conversations are never used for training
- Data processed primarily in the US, with EU data residency available for Enterprise
- OpenAI’s data processing agreements meet GDPR requirements for Enterprise tier
Gemini
- Free tier: conversations may be used for model improvement
- Workspace and Vertex AI: data is not used for training and is covered by Google’s existing data processing agreements
- Data residency options available within the EU and UK
- Inherits existing Google Workspace compliance certifications (ISO 27001, SOC 2/3, etc.)
For any organisation subject to GDPR, the UK Data Protection Act 2018, or sector-specific regulation, free-tier AI tools are not appropriate for processing personal or confidential data. Enterprise-grade deployments with appropriate data processing agreements are the minimum standard. For a detailed analysis, see our AI and data privacy guide.
Shadow AI risk
Regardless of which tool you officially adopt, your employees are likely already using both — and possibly others — without approval. This shadow AI risk is best managed through an AI policy that provides approved tools and clear usage guidelines, rather than blanket bans.
Which should you choose?
Choose ChatGPT if:
- Your primary use cases are text-heavy: writing, analysis, reasoning, coding
- You are on Microsoft 365 and want Copilot integration
- You need the broadest plugin and integration ecosystem
- Your teams are already familiar with ChatGPT
Choose Gemini if:
- You are a Google Workspace organisation
- Multimodal capabilities (image, video, audio analysis) are important
- You need strong search-grounded responses with current information
- Data residency within the UK or EU is a hard requirement
Choose both if:
- Your organisation uses both Google and Microsoft tools
- Different teams have different primary use cases
- You want to avoid vendor lock-in
- You can manage the governance complexity of multiple platforms
The tool matters less than the training. A well-trained team using either platform will outperform an untrained team using both. Invest in AI literacy before investing in premium AI subscriptions.
Building AI competency regardless of platform
Whichever tool you choose, your teams need training on how to use it effectively, safely, and in compliance with your governance framework. The skills are largely transferable:
- Prompt engineering — structuring inputs for consistent, high-quality outputs
- Output evaluation — assessing AI responses for accuracy, bias, and hallucinations
- Data handling — understanding what can and cannot be shared with AI tools
- Responsible use — following organisational policies and regulatory requirements
